More than 20 years after Tobey Maguire first swung into cinemas in Sam Raimi’s 2002 Spider-Man, screenwriter Mattson Tomlin has indicated he would like to explore a new chapter for that version of the hero. Tomlin, who co-wrote The Batman: Part II, has publicly voiced interest in a Spider-Man 4 centered on Maguire’s Peter Parker.
Tomlin Outlines a Mature, Family-Focused Peter
In a recent exchange on X (formerly Twitter), Tomlin replied to a fan asking about his engagement with the Spider-Man universe. He said he’s especially drawn to the idea of portraying an older Peter balancing domestic life with hero duties.
Tomlin wrote that his primary inclination would be to craft a Spider-Man 4 where Maguire’s Spider-Man is navigating life as a husband and parent.
He added that the concept of a father figure for Spider-Man appeals to him, noting it as a natural direction after the themes explored across recent films.
Tomlin’s comments have reignited interest among viewers who enjoyed Maguire’s cameo alongside Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), a crossover moment that brought three cinematic Spider-Men together.
Where Does Spider-Man 4 Stand?
Asked whether any progress had been made on a potential Spider-Man 4, Tomlin gave a measured response that suggested optimism but no certainty.
He observed that development would be slow and complicated, involving many stakeholders, yet added that he hasn’t received a definite refusal: “I haven’t gotten a 'no' yet,” he said.
There has been no official word from Tobey Maguire or Sam Raimi. Still, Tomlin’s statements have amplified speculation about either continuing Raimi’s original trilogy or creating a fresh, multiverse-linked story about a seasoned, family-minded Peter Parker.
Tom Holland’s Next MCU Installment: Brand New Day
Meanwhile, Tom Holland will lead the next MCU Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, set to open on July 31, 2026.
Zendaya returns as MJ, and Holland has described the project as a reset for his iteration of the character after the events of No Way Home.
Tomlin’s Other Projects
Tomlin is also attached to The Batman: Part II, directed by Matt Reeves and starring Robert Pattinson, which is currently scheduled for release in October 2027.
Given his growing footprint in superhero storytelling, Tomlin’s interest in Maguire’s Spider-Man keeps the door open for potential multiverse-driven reunions—dependent on studio decisions and creative alignment.
For now, no formal announcement has been made about a Tobey Maguire-led Spider-Man feature, but Tomlin’s remarks have sparked renewed online enthusiasm.
Whether it eventually takes the form of a straight sequel or a multiversal crossover, audiences remain keen to see Maguire’s Peter Parker return as an older, wiser, and still community-minded Spider-Man.
