On Wednesday, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) celebrated a landmark achievement in its commercial space initiative by successfully sending the BlueBird Block-2 satellite into orbit for AST SpaceMobile, a US-based company.
The launch took place at 8:55 am from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, using ISRO's powerful LVM3-M6 rocket. Shortly afterward, ISRO confirmed that the satellite was correctly positioned into its designated Low Earth Orbit (LEO).
At 6,100 kg, BlueBird Block-2 sets the record as the heaviest payload ever launched by ISRO’s LVM3 rocket, reinforcing India's stance in the global commercial space sector.
A Significant Leap for ISRO's Commercial Ventures
Executed through a commercial partnership between ISRO's NewSpace India Limited (NSIL) and AST SpaceMobile, this successful mission underscores the growing global faith in India's heavy-lift launch capabilities.
Prior to this, the heaviest payload carried by the LVM3 was Communication Satellite-03, at approximately 4,400 kg. The BlueBird Block-2 mission substantially surpasses that weight.
Aiming for Global Connectivity
AST SpaceMobile is working towards establishing the world's first cellular broadband network from space, designed for direct connection to standard smartphones, eliminating the need for specialized satellite gear.
Once operational, the BlueBird Block-2 satellite will facilitate 4G and 5G services, enabling voice calls, video streaming, and messaging in remote and underserved areas, catering to both commercial and governmental needs.
Congratulatory Messages from Leadership
Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the mission, deeming it a proud moment for India's advancements in space technology.
In a post on X, he remarked that the launch illustrates India's strides toward Aatmanirbhar Bharat and commended Indian scientists for elevating the nation's global reputation in space science.
Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh, also praised the ISRO team, noting their ongoing series of successes under transformative leadership.
About the LVM3 Rocket
The LVM3, also recognized as GSLV Mk-III, is a robust 43.5-metre-tall rocket, engineered to carry significant payloads and facilitate human space missions.
Developed with a cryogenic upper stage by ISRO’s Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre, it incorporates twin S200 solid rocket boosters crafted by the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, delivering the immense thrust required at launch.
This rocket has successfully executed notable missions, including Chandrayaan-2, Chandrayaan-3, and various OneWeb satellite launches, proving its dependability.
A Transformative Moment in India’s Space Narrative
The successful launch of BlueBird Block-2 not only showcases ISRO’s advancing technical prowess but also indicates India’s emergence as a credible player in the international commercial space arena. With enhanced payload capacities and established reliability, the LVM3 is expected to attract a new wave of global clientele.
