Thousands March in Freezing Minneapolis to Protest ICE Crackdown

Thousands March in Freezing Minneapolis to Protest ICE Crackdown

Post by : Meena Ariff

Thousands of people stepped out into dangerous, bone-chilling weather on Friday to march through the streets of Minneapolis, calling for an end to President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown in the city.

The day began with temperatures dropping to nearly minus 20°F (minus 29°C), yet the crowd continued to grow as protesters gathered and moved through major streets with strong slogans and signs demanding that immigration enforcement operations stop in their community.

The demonstration was part of a broader campaign known as “ICE OUT!”, which organizers described as a public show of resistance against the increased presence and actions of immigration officers. Along with the march, the protest was also promoted as a general strike, encouraging people to stay away from work and daily routines as a message of unity and pressure.

Organizers claimed that participation reached as many as 50,000 people, although that number could not be officially confirmed. Minneapolis police did not provide a crowd estimate when asked.

As the outdoor march continued in harsh winter conditions, many participants later moved indoors for a larger gathering at the Target Center, a major sports arena in downtown Minneapolis. The venue, which can hold around 20,000 people, was reported to be more than half full as demonstrators listened to speeches and continued their calls for change.

The protest reflected growing tension in the city, with residents and activists raising concerns about immigration enforcement actions and their impact on families, workers, and local communities. Despite the cold and difficult conditions, the turnout showed strong public emotion and determination, as people demanded that the crackdown end and that Minneapolis be free from what they described as aggressive enforcement operations.
