In Minneapolis last week, 37-year-old Alex Pretti was fatally shot by immigration agents during a tense confrontation. A nearby pediatrician, witnessing the incident from his apartment, rushed to help but was initially blocked by officials. According to a court filing, the doctor said the agents “shoved” Pretti to the ground and fired multiple shots before he intervened.
The pediatrician, whose identity remains confidential, recalled how he identified himself to agents and requested permission to provide medical aid. Despite initial hesitation and demands for proof of his medical license, the agents eventually allowed him to check on Pretti after a security pat-down.
Feeling a strong professional and moral obligation, the doctor immediately checked for a pulse and began CPR when none was found. Emergency responders soon arrived and took over efforts to save Pretti’s life.
Emotional from the event, the doctor said he was “sobbing and shaking uncontrollably” after witnessing the shooting. As protests erupted across Minneapolis, he left his apartment, expressing concern for his safety and uncertainty about returning.
Video footage from the scene shows agents wrestling Pretti, a US citizen and ICU nurse, to the ground. An agent then seized Pretti’s gun and fired multiple shots, killing him instantly. Witnesses can be heard screaming in shock and disbelief.
Pretti’s family denies claims from the Department of Homeland Security that the agents acted in self-defense. They maintain that Pretti was trying to protect a woman nearby when the shooting occurred.
This tragic event has ignited widespread protests and raised urgent questions about the use of force by immigration officials in the city. The investigation into the incident continues as the community demands accountability and justice.
