Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin held high-level talks in New Delhi on Friday, with their discussions expected to cover trade, energy, defence and several areas of strategic cooperation between the two countries. The meeting comes at an important time for India-Russia relations, with both sides looking to expand economic and strategic ties despite major changes in the global geopolitical environment. The two leaders are meeting just days before the annual BRICS summit in New Delhi, where several major world leaders are expected to gather. The timing of the meeting gives additional importance to the discussions between India and Russia. 

Trade, Energy and Defence Expected to Dominate Talks

The discussions in New Delhi are expected to cover a broad range of issues, including India Russia trade, defence cooperation, energy security and industrial partnerships. Indian officials are also expected to discuss cooperation in civil nuclear energy, fertilisers, critical minerals, manufacturing, railways and steel. These areas are considered important for India's long-term economic and energy requirements. Both countries have maintained extensive economic relations for decades, while defence cooperation remains one of the strongest pillars of their bilateral partnership.

India and Russia Maintain Strong Energy Cooperation

Energy is expected to remain another major topic during the discussions. India has continued purchasing large quantities of Russian crude oil, making Russia one of the country's most important sources of energy imports. The importance of Russian oil for Indian refiners increased further in 2026 after disruptions in supplies from the Middle East affected global energy markets. Reports indicated that Russia's share of India's crude oil imports reached a record level of about 51 percent in July. The proportion reportedly declined in August as China increased its purchases of Russian crude. For India, access to affordable and reliable energy remains a major economic priority because of the country's large population and growing industrial and transportation requirements.

Ukraine War Also Remains an Important Issue

The ongoing war in Ukraine is another issue that could influence the wider India-Russia discussions. During their previous meeting in Bishkek on Aug 31, Modi told Putin that the conflict needed to end and said India would support efforts aimed at achieving peace. India has consistently called for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the Ukraine conflict. New Delhi has also maintained that restrictions on energy, metals and fertiliser trade alone cannot provide a lasting solution to the crisis and has continued to engage with both Russia and Western countries. India's position has allowed it to maintain relations with Moscow while also expanding diplomatic engagement with other major global powers.

Modi-Putin Talks Take Place in New Delhi

The latest meeting between Modi and Putin is taking place in New Delhi, India, shortly before the BRICS Summit. The summit is expected to bring together leaders from several major emerging economies. Chinese President Xi Jinping and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian are among the leaders expected to participate. The presence of several major international leaders makes New Delhi an important centre of diplomatic activity. For India, the meetings also provide an opportunity to strengthen bilateral relationships while discussing broader economic and geopolitical issues affecting the Global South.

Civil nuclear energy could become an increasingly important area of cooperation as India looks for additional sources of low-carbon electricity to meet rising demand. Fertilisers are another important area because India depends on stable supplies to support its agricultural sector. Cooperation in railways, steel and manufacturing could also contribute to increased economic engagement between the two countries. These sectors offer opportunities for both governments and businesses to expand bilateral cooperation beyond traditional areas.

Putin's Previous India Visit

Putin's latest visit follows his trip to India in December 2025 for the annual India-Russia summit. During that visit, the two countries agreed to strengthen their trade and defence relationship. At the same time, the relationship is evolving as India expands its economic engagement with different global markets and seeks to balance its strategic interests amid changing international alliances.
