A major industrial incident at Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) in Mangaluru, Karnataka, triggered panic across nearby areas on Wednesday, September 30, after a loud explosion was followed by a large plume of smoke from the refinery premises. The incident took place at the facility near Kuthethoor and Jokatte, an important industrial area on the outskirts of Mangaluru. According to reports emerging from the site, the incident involved the refinery's Coker Hydrotreater unit. A report citing information about the facility said a high-pressure cold separator ruptured, leading to the explosion and subsequent fire. Emergency teams immediately responded to the incident and worked to contain the flames. The sudden blast was powerful enough to be heard across several parts of Mangaluru. Residents in areas around Jokatte, Kavoor, Yeyyadi and other nearby locations reported hearing a loud boom.

Several People Reported Injured

Reports available later in the day indicated that several people sustained injuries in the incident. The Indian Express reported that eight people were injured, including one employee who suffered serious burn injuries and was receiving treatment. Other reports put the number of injured at around nine. Because the figures have varied across early reports, the final confirmed number should be treated as subject to official clarification. The incident therefore became a major Refinery Fire emergency, with firefighting and emergency response teams working at the location. Officials and emergency personnel were also monitoring the surrounding area while assessing the situation and possible damage.

Fire Brought Under Control

The fire following the blast was later reported to have been brought under control. Emergency response teams from the refinery acted quickly to prevent the situation from spreading to other sections of the facility. A report citing company information said the emergency and firefighting teams responded immediately after the incident.
