Gaza City: Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has been forced to suspend its vital medical operations in Gaza City due to the ongoing Israeli offensive, which has intensified airstrikes and brought tanks to within half a mile of its health facilities. The decision highlights the severe risks faced by humanitarian workers in conflict zones and the escalating humanitarian crisis in the region.
The international medical organisation stated that the increasing attacks from Israeli forces have created an unacceptable level of risk for its staff, leaving them with no alternative but to halt lifesaving medical activities. “We have been left with no choice but to stop our operations as our clinics are now encircled by Israeli forces,” said Jacob Granger, MSF emergency coordinator in Gaza.
The suspension comes at a time of heightened humanitarian need in Gaza City. Vulnerable populations, including infants in neonatal care, people with severe injuries, and patients with life-threatening illnesses, are unable to move safely and face extreme danger due to the conflict. The pause in operations underscores the dire situation for civilians who rely on medical care for survival.
MSF emphasised that this was not a decision taken lightly. The organisation called on all parties involved in the conflict to respect international humanitarian law, allow safe access for healthcare workers, and ensure that civilians receive urgent medical care. MSF also highlighted the critical shortage of medical supplies and the mounting challenges faced by hospitals and clinics amid ongoing attacks.
The Israeli military offensive in Gaza has significantly strained the city’s healthcare system, reducing the capacity to treat thousands of residents in urgent need. Hospitals and clinics are struggling to provide care under dangerous conditions, and the suspension of MSF services further limits medical options for the population.
Humanitarian agencies are warning of a worsening crisis, urging international communities to intervene and provide support. The halt of MSF operations demonstrates the profound impact of armed conflict on essential medical services, and the urgent need for coordinated humanitarian aid to protect both patients and medical staff.
This situation in Gaza highlights the complex challenges faced by healthcare providers operating in war zones, where safety risks, restricted access, and high civilian casualties create a precarious environment for delivering critical medical care.
