Nato Leaders Back Historic 5% Defence Spending in The Hague

World leaders from Nato countries have gathered in The Hague for an important two-day summit. This meeting is being called historic by Germany's Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who says it’s about protecting peace in Europe for the future.

This is US President Donald Trump’s first Nato summit since 2019. All 32 Nato countries are agreeing to spend 5% of their national income on defense and related needs, like military buildings and cyber defense.

Nato’s new leader, Mark Rutte, praised Trump for helping get all members to agree on this new goal. He also supported Trump’s recent actions in Iran, saying it made everyone safer.

Some countries are struggling to meet the new 5% goal. Right now, most Nato countries spend much less, with Spain, Belgium, and Slovakia wanting more time or asking for exceptions. Spain’s leader said spending so much would be unfair and cause problems at home, but Nato says all members must aim for the same goal.

Germany plans to hit the 3.5% defense spending target by 2029, using money from loans and special funds. The UK promised to reach the full 5% by 2035.

This summit is also happening during hard times in Ukraine. Russian missiles recently hit the city of Dnipro and other areas, killing 20 people and hurting over 160. Ukraine’s President Zelensky is also attending the summit and will meet with Trump to discuss support.

The summit began with a royal dinner hosted by the Dutch King and Queen. The actual talks will be short but important, ending with a joint statement.

There was also a train problem near Amsterdam airport, caused by damaged cables. Authorities are checking if it was an accident or sabotage.
