YouTube CEO Neal Mohan has been named TIME Magazine’s 2025 CEO of the Year, earning acclaim for guiding the platform through a transformative era and shaping global digital culture. Under Mohan’s leadership, YouTube has become a central part of how billions access information, entertainment, and education, with TIME calling him a “cultural architect” whose decisions influence the content millions consume daily. The magazine described him as a “farmer” cultivating the digital landscape, where YouTube provides the soil and creators plant ideas that affect the world’s cultural diet.
Neal Mohan, 52, was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1973 to Tamil parents who later moved to Lucknow, India. There, he became fluent in Hindi and studied Sanskrit, comparing the language’s structured rules to computer programming. Mohan returned to the United States for higher education, earning both his undergraduate degree and MBA from Stanford University. He began his career in consulting before joining NetGravity, a digital advertising startup later acquired by DoubleClick. At DoubleClick, Mohan played a key role in its $3.1 billion sale to Google in 2007, which connected him with Susan Wojcicki, future CEO of YouTube.
Wojcicki later recruited Mohan to YouTube, and he worked closely with her for years, taking on many responsibilities during her cancer treatment. Following her passing in August 2024, Mohan succeeded her as CEO in 2023. Since taking the helm, he has navigated the company through high-profile legal challenges, including a lawsuit stemming from the suspension of President Donald Trump’s channel after the January 6 Capitol attack. In September 2025, YouTube settled the case for $24.5 million without admitting wrongdoing, directing $22 million to a nonprofit supporting a White House ballroom project.
Beyond his professional achievements, Mohan balances his leadership role with family life, raising two daughters and a son with his wife, Hema Sareen Mohan. His recognition as TIME’s CEO of the Year reflects his impact on global digital media, emphasizing both innovation in technology and the cultural influence of YouTube on audiences worldwide.
This detailed profile highlights Neal Mohan’s journey from a multilingual student in India to a leading figure in global tech, underscoring his role in shaping YouTube as a platform that influences the content, culture, and conversations of billions of users.
