In a devastating incident in Yobe State, northeastern Nigeria, 25 people have tragically lost their lives after a passenger boat capsized on Saturday evening. This event marks one of the most severe maritime accidents in the region for the year, occurring as many were returning from a bustling market day.
The vessel, identified as a sizeable wooden canoe, had departed from Adiyani village in Jigawa State, heading toward Garbi in Yobe State. The capsizing happened shortly before 8 p.m. local time while navigating the river, throwing all the people on board into the water.
Officials reported that the canoe was carrying 52 individuals. Rescue efforts led to the salvation of 13 passengers, with teams recovering 25 bodies from the river. As of now, 14 individuals remain missing, and search operations continued tirelessly through the night into Sunday, supported by divers, volunteers, and local security forces.
Witnesses indicated that many victims were traders returning home after a long day at the market. Concern grew among families when the boat was delayed, sparking a search that led to the discovery of the overturned canoe along the route.
Preliminary investigations by police suggest that the capsizing was caused by water infiltration and possible overloading. Authorities emphasized that safety protocols prohibiting nighttime travel on waterways were breached. If the boat's driver is found alive, legal repercussions for negligence are anticipated.
Boat accidents are not uncommon in Nigeria, particularly in rural regions where waterways serve as vital means of transport. Factors such as inadequate safety measures, overcrowding, and nighttime navigation continue to jeopardize lives. Earlier this year, a similar boat tragedy in Niger State resulted in numerous fatalities, underscoring the persistent risks faced by river travelers.
As the communities in Yobe and Jigawa states mourn their losses, rescue teams remain dedicated to locating those still missing, striving to provide solace to grieving families.
