Norway has successfully achieved its bold target to eliminate the sale of new fossil-fuel passenger vehicles by 2025. Recent figures from the Norwegian Road Federation (OFV) reveal that almost all new cars registered in 2025 were electric or plug-in hybrids, marking a key step in the nation's journey toward sustainable transportation.
A total of 179,549 new passenger cars were registered in Norway throughout 2025. Of these, 172,232 were fully electric, while 2,751 were classified as plug-in hybrids. Together, these vehicles accounted for a remarkable 95.9% of all new car sales, an increase from 88.9% recorded in 2024.
Moreover, 97.5% of all new vehicles sold last year were equipped to charge via a plug, highlighting Norway's pioneering role in electric vehicle acceptance.
The remaining figures included 2,306 conventional hybrids without plug-in support, 1,773 diesel cars, and a mere 487 petrol vehicles. This means that only 1.3% of new cars sold in 2025 were without traction batteries. Notably, there were no hydrogen-powered vehicles registered this year, compared to nine in the preceding year.
Norway's strong commitment to electric mobility reflects its dedication to minimizing carbon emissions and nurturing a greener, more sustainable transportation future.
