Srinagar, Nov 15, 2025: A catastrophic blast at the Nowgam police station, located just outside Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, resulted in the deaths of nine individuals, as reported by official sources. The explosion erupted while forensic teams were analyzing a significant stockpile of explosives previously seized from Faridabad, Haryana, in connection to a terrorist inquiry.
The deceased included members of the Special Investigation Team (SIA), personnel from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), crime scene photographers, revenue officials, and a tailor collaborating with the investigation unit. J&K Police Chief Nalin Prabhat indicated that while the incident was accidental, it was directly tied to the explosives confiscated in Haryana.
This cache was part of a 2,900 kg haul obtained from the residences of those suspected in a wider investigation into a Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terror network. This module has previously been linked to various threats and attacks, including the recent Red Fort blast in Delhi that resulted in at least ten fatalities.
Preliminary police investigations have hinted that the explosives found in Faridabad are part of a wider assistance network aiding urban terrorist factions in Jammu and Kashmir. Core seizures included 2,563 kg sourced from the residence of Hafeez Mohammad Ishtiaq, a local imam, followed by an additional 358 kg including detonators and timers from adjacent sites.
In connection with this terror module, several arrests have been made involving clerics, medical professionals, and local inhabitants across Nowgam, Ganderbal, Pulwama, and Kulgam. Furthermore, JeM posters and related materials were discovered during subsequent raids, linking the investigation to individuals previously engaged in plots associated with the Red Fort, such as Dr Umar un Nabi, who reportedly initiated the blast in Delhi using similar explosives.
The incident at Nowgam police station highlights the severe dangers that security and forensic personnel encounter when dealing with large volumes of confiscated explosives. Shocked residents of Srinagar have expressed their condolences, while police have initiated a thorough investigation to verify adherence to safety procedures.
Officials have reiterated that this event is part of ongoing nationwide initiatives aimed at dismantling terrorist modules tied to JeM and other extremist organizations. While the discovery and confiscation of explosives in Faridabad represents a significant achievement, Friday's tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the continuing risks associated with terrorist stockpiles.
As the inquiry progresses, authorities are advocating for heightened caution in the management of explosive materials, reaffirming their commitment to eradicating terrorist networks across various states.
