Today in Muscat, Oman, a significant workshop titled "International Labour Standards: Building Local Policies and Capacities" commenced. Organized by the Ministry of Labour alongside the International Labour Organization (ILO), this event features participation from experts, government officials, and private sector representatives from Oman and neighboring nations. The workshop's opening ceremony was led by Dr. Mahad Said Ba'owain, the Minister of Labour.
The primary goal of the workshop is to aid Oman and its surrounding region in crafting labour laws that align with international standards. It focuses on training officials in developing effective labour policies, clarifying the roles of the government, employers, and employees while sharing insights from other nations. This initiative aims to enhance workplace standards and safeguard worker rights.
Khalid Salim Al Ghammari, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Labour, emphasized the rapid changes in job markets and work dynamics. He noted that adhering to international labour standards enables governments to harmonize economic development with the protection of worker rights and the provision of safe working conditions.
Gilbert Houngbo, the Director-General of the ILO, remarked that this is the inaugural program of its kind in the region. He highlighted that these standards, established since 1919, play a critical role in fostering social justice, ensuring safe work environments, and promoting economic prosperity. Collaboration and compliance with these standards are essential to eliminate forced labor and enhance labor safety.
Faisal Abdullah Al Rowas, Chairman of the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry, pointed out that the workshop advances Oman’s labour regulations and fortifies the partnership among government, employers, and workers. Nabhan Ahmed Al Battashi, Chairman of the General Federation of Oman Workers, indicated that Oman is modernizing its work policies to comply with international frameworks.
The workshop includes workshops, presentations, and dialogues aimed at formulating policies that adhere to global regulations, improving labour market management, and fostering social dialogue for fairness. Participants are also gaining insights from other countries regarding occupational health and safety. They assert that this workshop will facilitate safer work environments, support economic growth, and protect workers in line with Oman Vision 2040.
