A wave of shock has enveloped Taipei following a tragic and rare act of violence in its bustling heart, where a single perpetrator took four lives, including his own. Authorities have confirmed that the attacker acted independently, with no signs of accomplices.
The horrific incident unfolded on Friday evening in a crowded shopping and transit area. Police revealed that 27-year-old Chang Wen from Taoyuan city employed smoke grenades before launching a knife attack, beginning near the city’s main train station and extending toward a nearby mall.
After the attack, Chang Wen attempted to evade capture but fell from a building during the police pursuit, increasing the incident's death toll to four.
Director-General of the National Police Agency, Chang Jung-hsin, stated in a press conference that there are no known connections to other individuals. “Preliminary investigations point to the suspect's solitary action,” he noted, as police delve into the attack's motive.
According to the Premier, Chang Wen was already under scrutiny by authorities, with an arrest warrant issued for skipping mandatory military service. Officials are currently exploring whether this factor played a role in the attack.
The Health Ministry reported 11 individuals sustained injuries from the incident, with two in critical condition needing intensive care; the rest are receiving treatment for stab wounds and smoke inhalation. Hospital representatives assured that medical staff are dedicated to supporting the recovery of those affected.
Such violent occurrences are highly unusual in Taiwan, a nation recognized for its public safety. This incident has left residents in disbelief, as many never anticipated such an event in a popular public space.
In light of the attack, police have stepped up security measures throughout Taipei and beyond. Mayor Chiang Wan-an announced increased patrols in shopping regions, transport centers, and other densely populated areas, urging officers to remain vigilant and fully equipped.
On Saturday, President Lai Ching-te visited the injured in hospitals, emphasizing the government's commitment to reevaluating emergency response initiatives. He stated, “We must learn from this tragedy and react more swiftly in crises,” ensuring that public safety remains paramount.
As inquiries unfold, authorities are advising the public to remain composed and collaborate with law enforcement. While Taipei mourns its losses, officials affirm that decisive actions are underway to restore a sense of security for residents and visitors alike.
