Historic $1.8 Billion Powerball Jackpot Sold in Arkansas

Historic $1.8 Billion Powerball Jackpot Sold in Arkansas

Post by : Badri Ariffin

In a remarkable twist of fate, a lucky individual in Arkansas became an instant millionaire with the purchase of a Powerball ticket that won a jaw-dropping jackpot exceeding $1.8 billion. This award ranks as the second-largest in the history of U.S. lotteries.

The winning ticket, matched every white ball and the Powerball in the Christmas Eve draw, culminating a lengthy period without a jackpot winner in this popular multi-state lottery.

Winning Ticket Purchased in Cabot

Located in the small city of Cabot, northeast of Little Rock and home to roughly 27,000 residents, the ticket was sold at a Murphy USA gas station. Given its proximity to a major interstate, there’s speculation that the winner may not even be a resident but a traveler.

According to Murphy USA spokesperson Alejandra Barron, there was a surge of customers on Christmas Eve, many drawn specifically to buy Powerball tickets. This isn’t the first time luck has shone on this chain; earlier this year, a winning Mega Millions ticket of $800 million was sold in Texas.

Community Abuzz with Speculation

Mayor Ken Kincade of Cabot expressed the thrill and chatter surrounding the draw. “Everybody's curious,” he noted. “It’s trending on social media, with everyone guessing who the winner could be.”

While he wishes for a local to win, he recognized the reality that the ticket's purchaser could very well be a passing motorist.

Next Steps for the Winner

According to rules set by the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery, the ticket holder has 180 days to claim their prize. For winnings over $500,000, winners can maintain their anonymity for three years, but this is reduced to six months for elected officials or close relatives.

The jackpot will also incur substantial taxes, with Arkansas’s top income tax rate at 3.9%. Should the winner select the lump-sum option of about $834.9 million, state taxes alone would surpass $32 million, along with potential deductions for overdue taxes or legal obligations.

A Unique Christmas Eve Win

This event marks the first time since 2011 that a Powerball jackpot has been claimed on Christmas Eve. Previously, the game has seen wins on Christmas Day, with the last occurrence in 2013.

With odds standing at 1 in 292.2 million, Powerball aims to create tremendous jackpots. The game modified its odds in 2015 to encourage substantial prize growth while still permitting better chances for smaller wins.

Powerball tickets are available for $2 in 45 states, plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The Winning Numbers

The numbers drawn on Christmas Eve were 04, 25, 31, 52, and 59, alongside the Powerball number 19.

As Arkansas awaits, the anticipation builds for the mystery winner to emerge and claim one of the most considerable lottery prizes ever awarded in the nation.
