The International Cricket Council (ICC) has classified the pitch used in the first Ashes Test at Perth as “very good”, the highest accolade in their pitch evaluation criteria. This rating was confirmed by match referee Ranjan Madugalle after assessing the conditions during the two-day game between Australia and England.
In the ICC’s four-tier pitch rating framework, a “very good” designation indicates a pitch that fosters a fair balance between batting and bowling. Pitches that achieve this rating typically exhibit solid carry, minimal seam movement, and consistent bounce, allowing both bowlers and batsmen ample opportunity to shine.
The inaugural Ashes Test at Perth was notably brief, wrapping up in just two days. Despite the fast conclusion, the match drew significant crowds, with over 101,514 spectators attending. The excitement for the Ashes series was palpable, particularly on the first day, which saw 19 wickets fall for 305 runs, leading to a captivating start. Australia quickly chased down England’s score of 205 in just one session on the second day, showcasing a commanding batting display.
James Allsop, Chief of Cricket at Cricket Australia, commented on the ICC’s rating, stating that while the match concluded sooner than anticipated, the quality of play was exceptional. He acknowledged the disappointment of fans holding tickets for Days 3 and 4, as they missed out on further action, but emphasized that the rapid pace and high-quality performances made the Test memorable.
Allsop pointed out that the pitch rating confirmed Perth Stadium provided a fair playing surface. He noted the remarkable fast bowling from both teams that contributed to the game’s quick progression. The intensity was heightened as bowlers from both sides delivered impressive spells throughout the match.
Although some fans were unable to witness live cricket due to the fast finish, he mentioned that the match included thrilling moments that captivated audiences at the stadium and watching on television. He expressed optimism that the match's exciting nature might inspire young fans to engage with cricket, particularly during the summer.
The Perth pitch has a reputation for benefiting fast bowlers, and this Test reaffirmed that trait. With consistent bounce and pace, bowlers could adopt an aggressive approach, resulting in frequent wickets and swift momentum shifts. Nevertheless, the pitch was not deemed excessively challenging for batsmen, as evidenced by Travis Head’s impactful innings and various partnerships demonstrating that runs could still be secured with strategic play.
The ICC’s commendation of the pitch as “very good” underscores its suitability for Test cricket by rewarding the skills of both competing teams without unfair advantage. This assessment is significant for future fixtures at Perth Stadium, enhancing the venue’s reputation for quality pitches.
With the Ashes series ongoing, the dramatic kickoff in Perth has set a thrilling precedent for the contest between England and Australia. Fans eagerly await the upcoming Tests, hoping for more exhilarating moments, even if they last beyond two days.
