Pheu Thai Picks Shinawatra Nephew as Prime Minister Candidate Ahead of Elections

Pheu Thai Picks Shinawatra Nephew as Prime Minister Candidate Ahead of Elections

Post by : Saif Rahman

As Thailand gears up for the scheduled general elections on February 8, 2026, the Pheu Thai party is banking on a new face from the influential Shinawatra family. In the wake of founder Thaksin Shinawatra’s incarceration, his nephew, Yodchanan Wongsawat, has been named as the party's candidate for prime minister.

At 46, Yodchanan is the offspring of former Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat and nephew to Thaksin. Though he is a newcomer in the realm of politics, Yodchanan expressed that he derives motivation from the family's legacy that has significantly influenced Thai politics for over two decades. “I’m the very small guy, but I’m on the shoulder of a giant,” he remarked to Reuters, recognizing the prominent history of his family.

Thaksin was imprisoned last September for neglecting an earlier sentence related to conflicts of interest and abuse of power during his tenure from 2001 to 2006. Meanwhile, his daughter, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, was dismissed from her position in August due to a court verdict linked to a leaked conversation with Cambodia's former leader, Hun Sen. Ongoing tensions with Cambodia have been reignited, leading to renewed conflicts in December.

Political unrest has diminished Pheu Thai's support base. A recent poll conducted by the National Institute of Development Administration indicated the party's backing stood at merely 11.04%, a decline from 13.96% in September and 28.05% in March. The elections were hastily announced after Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul disbanded parliament due to discord with opposition factions.

Nevertheless, Yodchanan remains optimistic that Pheu Thai can still secure victory by advocating for its policies, such as universal healthcare and cash handouts, strategies that have historically resonated with rural constituents. “We still believe we can win,” he stated. “If we can communicate our vision clearly, people will support us.”

With an academic and scientific background, Yodchanan holds a PhD from the University of Texas at Arlington and serves as a professor of biomedical engineering at Mahidol University in Bangkok. Although he has had limited political involvement—mainly as a technology policy advisor—he hopes his experience in navigating complex projects will empower him in leadership.

Pheu Thai has a rich history of elevating political novices to significant roles. Yingluck Shinawatra became prime minister in 2011, followed by Srettha Thavisin and Paetongtarn Shinawatra in 2023. Yodchanan faces similar hurdles, including rising nationalist sentiments and ongoing discord with Cambodia.

Experts predict the forthcoming elections may not yield a decisive majority. Should the need arise, Yodchanan has expressed openness to forming a coalition government. “We want to win, obviously,” he commented. “But if we cannot, we can partner with a party that shares our goals.”

As Thailand approaches these pivotal elections, Pheu Thai is challenged with balancing the legacy of the Shinawatra family while convincing voters of its capacity for fresh and effective leadership. Yodchanan’s candidacy will be closely monitored, with the potential to significantly alter the political dynamics in Thailand.
