Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday extended his best wishes to Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut after the senior politician announced that he would be taking a temporary break from public life due to serious health concerns.
The gesture came shortly after Raut revealed on social media that he was undergoing medical treatment and had been advised to avoid public interactions. In his post, Raut assured supporters of his determination to recover, saying, “You have all loved and trusted me. But I have developed serious health issues and am undergoing treatment. I will come out of this.”
Responding to Raut’s announcement, Prime Minister Modi posted on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Praying for your speedy recovery and good health, Sanjay Raut Ji.”
Expressing gratitude, Raut replied in Hindi: “Respected Prime Minister Ji, thank you! My family is grateful to you! Jai Hind! Jai Maharashtra!”
Raut’s withdrawal from active politics comes at a crucial time, with Maharashtra gearing up for key elections — including the municipal council polls in mid-November, Zilla Parishad elections in December, and the high-stakes BMC elections expected in January 2026.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), long considered a Shiv Sena stronghold, will be a vital battleground for the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction. As one of the party’s most influential strategists and outspoken voices, Raut’s temporary absence may leave a visible gap in the party’s campaign efforts.
He was also scheduled to participate in an Opposition protest against the Election Commission on November 1, an event that will now proceed without his presence.
Known for his sharp political commentary, Raut has often been one of the strongest critics of Prime Minister Modi and the central government. In 2024, he accused the PM of “instigating divisions” during his visits to Maharashtra and alleged that Modi was misusing his office for election campaigning.
In past years, Raut has also taken aim at the government over issues of foreign policy and judicial independence, notably questioning India’s response to China’s actions and expressing doubts about judicial neutrality.
Despite their political rivalry, Modi’s message of goodwill reflects a moment of civility and respect beyond party lines, drawing attention and appreciation across social media.
While no specific details about Raut’s illness have been made public, his team confirmed that he is undergoing treatment and following strict medical advice. Raut stated that he aims to make a full recovery by early next year and will resume public life once doctors permit.
As Maharashtra’s political landscape heats up ahead of the elections, Raut’s recovery and return to active politics will be closely watched — both by his supporters and political rivals alike.
