A significant political shift unfolded in Caracas as Delcy Rodriguez was inaugurated as Venezuela's interim president on Monday. This development followed the shocking capture of President Nicolas Maduro by US forces, who subsequently transported him to New York to confront drug trafficking allegations, an event that has captivated global attention.
Rodriguez pledged to serve “in the name of all Venezuelans” during a solemn oath-taking ceremony at the National Assembly, which was held under strict security to reflect the charged atmosphere prevailing in the capital. While ruling party legislators expressed solidarity with her, supporters of Maduro voiced their dissent in the assembly.
The National Assembly issued a declaration labeling Maduro's capture as an infringement on Venezuela's sovereignty, while extending full backing to Rodriguez, who had previously occupied the vice presidency. Her brother, Jorge Rodriguez, was affirmed as speaker of parliament, reinforcing their family's grip on Venezuela's governance structures.
Pro-Maduro crowds gathered outside the legislature, waving flags and calling for his release. Demonstrators reiterated slogans from Maduro's previous electoral campaign, asserting that Venezuela would resist foreign intervention. Many regarded the US actions as an intolerable infringement, irrespective of the charges against Maduro.
With visible emotion, Rodriguez expressed her anguish over what she termed the “kidnapping” of Maduro and his spouse, Cilia Flores, who also face US allegations. Despite stepping into her new role, she insisted that Maduro remains the rightful leader of Venezuela.
Tensions heightened later in the evening when unidentified drones were detected over the presidential palace in Caracas, prompting security forces to fire shots, with tales of gunfire quickly spreading across the city. Officials claimed the situation was contained, but the episode heightened concerns regarding potential instability.
Nicolas Maduro Guerra, the son of the ousted president, addressed parliament and later spoke to supporters outside, vowing allegiance to Rodriguez and expressing optimism about his parents' return. He reported that he remained in indirect communication with his father, affirming that the ruling faction is cohesive.
The Supreme Court mandated Rodriguez to take on the presidential role in an acting capacity, which was endorsed by the military. While she hinted at a readiness to engage with Washington, US President Donald Trump cautioned her against ignoring US requirements, especially concerning political reforms and oil policy.
As Venezuela embarks on this unpredictable phase, the atmosphere in Caracas is charged, with political dynamics shifted and the nation deeply split over future directions.
