PSLV Mission Fails, But KID Capsule Sends Data Back from Space

PSLV Mission Fails, But KID Capsule Sends Data Back from Space

Post by : Meena Ariff

Sometimes, achieving something remarkable requires a child-like determination and persistence. The KID capsule, a small payload aboard the recent PSLV-C62 launch, demonstrated exactly that spirit of resilience.

While the overall PSLV mission ended in failure, and it was initially assumed that all the satellites on board—including a crucial surveillance satellite—were lost, the KID capsule surprised everyone by managing to separate from the rocket and successfully transmit valuable data back to Earth.

This achievement holds special significance for the company behind KID, which is focused on making space travel and cargo return more efficient and cost-effective. Their mission is to develop capsules capable of safely returning cargo from space to Earth, withstanding the intense heat and pressure during atmospheric re-entry.

KID served as a technology demonstrator and prototype for their future vehicle, designed to carry up to 120 kilograms of payload back to the Earth’s surface from orbit.

The PSLV-C62 rocket launched smoothly from its launch site. However, problems arose during the third stage of the flight. Unexpected disturbances and deviations from the intended flight path were detected while the rocket’s strap-on motors were firing. These issues caused the mission to fail, resulting in the loss of most of the payload.

Among the lost satellites was an important earth observation satellite designed to support defense efforts by monitoring enemy activities and troop movements. Other satellites on board included a dedicated tanker satellite, satellites developed by private companies, and payloads created by students.

Despite the setback caused by the mission failure, the KID capsule’s successful separation and data transmission offer a promising glimpse into future space missions and cargo recovery operations.
