Radhika Apte Concerned About Rising Violence in Indian Films

Radhika Apte Concerned About Rising Violence in Indian Films

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Radhika Apte has spoken strongly about the growing use of graphic violence in Indian films and web shows, saying the trend has become deeply troubling and unhealthy for society. During a break from acting after the birth of her child, the actor shared that she feels increasingly uncomfortable with the way gore and brutality are being presented as entertainment.

Radhika said the rise of extreme violence on screen makes her question the kind of world children are being raised in. She explained that what worries her most is how easily violent visuals are being accepted by audiences, and how often violence is now used simply to attract attention. According to her, this shift is not only damaging for viewers but also harmful for the creative direction of the industry.

She said she does not believe that storytelling requires explicit visuals or shocking scenes to create impact. Radhika explained that if a filmmaker wants to tell the story of a criminal, it is not necessary to show the gruesome details to communicate the message. She stressed that storytelling should be rooted in emotion, meaning and human depth, not in sensationalism. She added that the industry must reflect on the long-term effects this trend of rising violence may have on societal behaviour and young audiences.

Radhika believes that after the pandemic, filmmaking has moved sharply towards spectacle, where style often overshadows substance. As someone known for powerful performances across independent cinema and digital platforms, she said this change worries her, especially when films prioritise brutality over character, story or message.

Along with expressing concern about this cultural shift, Radhika also highlighted the responsibility that filmmakers carry today. She said creators must find a balance between intense storytelling and responsible filmmaking, because the content reaching millions can shape attitudes and emotional responses.

While sharing her thoughts on violence in films, Radhika also spoke about her upcoming project, Saali Mohabbat. The psychological thriller, directed by Tisca Chopra, will release on ZEE5 on December 12, 2025. The film has already generated significant interest after screenings at major film festivals, including the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) and the Chicago South Asian Film Festival. Radhika’s performance in the film has been praised for its emotional intensity and depth, marking her return with a project that blends drama, suspense and strong character-driven storytelling.

Radhika’s remarks come at a time when debates around film content, violence, censorship and creative responsibility are becoming increasingly prominent in the Indian entertainment industry. Her comments have sparked discussion among filmmakers, viewers and industry professionals, bringing renewed focus on the kind of stories being created today.
