In a shocking turn of events, former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga passed away on Wednesday morning in Koothattukulam, Kerala, after suffering a massive heart attack during his routine morning walk. He was 80 years old. Odinga, who was in Kerala for Ayurvedic treatment, collapsed around 6:30 a.m. and was immediately rushed to Sreedhareeyam Ayurvedic Eye Hospital and Research Centre. Despite medical efforts, he could not be revived. His body has been placed at Deva Matha Hospital in Koothattukulam.
Odinga had arrived in Kerala six days earlier with his daughter and close family members, following a strict schedule of morning walks and treatment sessions at the Ayurvedic center. Local authorities confirmed that the heart attack occurred suddenly, leaving everyone in shock.
A towering figure in Kenyan politics for more than four decades, Raila Odinga served as Kenya's Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013. His tenure was notable for national reconciliation and constitutional reform, particularly after the political crisis and post-election violence of 2007–08. He played a crucial role in the power-sharing agreement that helped stabilize the nation, emerging as a respected leader advocating dialogue, reform, and democratic values.
Known for his passionate speeches and strong connection with grassroots communities, Odinga led the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and remained one of Kenya’s most prominent opposition leaders for decades. He contested multiple presidential elections and consistently pushed for a more inclusive political system, earning admiration both nationally and internationally.
The Kenyan Embassy in New Delhi has been informed and is working closely with the Kerala government and hospital authorities to facilitate the repatriation of Odinga's body. Tributes and condolences have poured in from local leaders, members of the Kenyan diaspora, and citizens who admired his contributions to Kenyan democracy. A formal statement from the Kenyan government is expected shortly.
Raila Odinga’s death marks the end of an era in Kenyan politics, leaving a lasting legacy of leadership, reform, and dedication to his country.
