India has lost one of its greatest artists. Ram Sutar, the famous sculptor who created the Statue of Unity, passed away late on Wednesday night, December 17, at his home in Noida, his family confirmed. He was 100 years old and had been unwell for some time due to old age.
The news of Ram Sutar death has brought deep sadness across the country. His son Anil Sutar shared an official statement with the media on Thursday morning. He said, “It is with deep sorrow that we inform you that my father, Shri Ram Vanji Sutar, passed away at our residence at midnight on December 17.”
How and When Ram Sutar Passed Away
Ram Sutar passed away peacefully at his home late at night. Family members said his health had been weak for some time because of age-related problems. Doctors had been monitoring him, but his condition slowly declined.
The Ram Sutar death marks the end of a long and inspiring life that touched Indian history, art, and culture.
Early Life and Love for Art
Ram Sutar was born on February 19, 1925, in a small village called Gondur in Dhule district of Maharashtra. From a young age, he showed a strong interest in art and clay work. Even as a child, he enjoyed shaping small figures with his hands.
Despite humble beginnings, he followed his dream with hard work and dedication. His talent earned him a place at the JJ School of Art and Architecture in Mumbai, one of India’s most respected art schools. There, he won a gold medal, which brought him early recognition.
A Lifetime of Iconic Sculptures
Over many decades, Ram Sutar created some of India’s most famous statues. His works can be seen in important places across the country.
Two of his well-known sculptures stand in the Parliament premises in New Delhi:
A peaceful statue of Mahatma Gandhi sitting in meditation
A powerful horse-riding statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj
These statues are known for their detail, emotion, and strong national feeling.
Statue of Unity: His Greatest Work
Ram Sutar’s biggest and most historic work was the Statue of Unity in Gujarat. This statue honors Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister.
Standing at 182 meters, the Statue of Unity is the tallest statue in the world. It has become a symbol of modern India and a major tourist attraction. Millions of people from India and abroad visit it every year.
Because of this work, the Ram Sutar death is being seen as a huge loss not just to art, but to the nation.
Nation Mourns a Legend
Artists, leaders, and citizens across India are remembering Ram Sutar for his simple life, strong values, and great contribution to Indian culture. His sculptures will continue to tell India’s story for generations to come.
Though Ram Sutar is no longer with us, his art will live forever.
