Robert Dear, who carried out a deadly shooting at a Colorado abortion clinic in 2015, has died while in federal prison. Dear was 67 years old when he passed away on Saturday at the U.S. Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Missouri. Officials have indicated that his death is likely due to natural causes, though details have not been fully disclosed.
Dear is known for attacking a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado on November 27, 2015. During the attack, he killed three people and injured nine others. He used a rifle, firing both outside and inside the clinic. The attack ended after a five-hour standoff, when Dear surrendered to the police. He referred to himself as a "warrior for the babies," reflecting his strong anti-abortion beliefs.
After his arrest, Dear faced multiple legal challenges. Two state court psychologists found him mentally unfit to stand trial because of paranoid delusional disorder. This diagnosis meant he could not properly assist in his defense. Due to his mental health, Dear was never convicted. Efforts were made by federal authorities to restore his mental competence, including a court order in 2024 to administer anti-psychotic medication without his consent. Experts believed the medication had a good chance of success, but his defense team argued it was unlikely to work given his age and long-term illness.
Dear remained in custody since the day of the attack. He was held at a federal prison medical center until his death. The court proceedings regarding his case were delayed multiple times due to his mental health condition, and he never faced a full trial.
This shooting was one of the deadliest attacks on a reproductive health facility in recent years. It brought attention to the ongoing tensions and violence surrounding abortion clinics in the United States. The tragedy affected many families and communities and led to increased security at such centers.
Robert Dear’s death closes a chapter on a long legal battle but leaves behind the memories of those lost and injured in the 2015 attack.
