Rowan Atkinson Critiques Mr. Bean Ahead of Netflix Series Release

British comedian Rowan Atkinson has opened up about his famous creation, Mr. Bean, in a candid and surprising revelation ahead of his Netflix miniseries Man vs. Baby, which premieres on December 11. Speaking at a London screening of the series, Atkinson described the beloved character in an unusually critical light, sharing that he personally dislikes Mr. Bean as a person.

Atkinson admitted that Mr. Bean is selfish, self-serving, and behaves like an anarchic child, and said he would never enjoy having dinner with the character in real life. Despite the character's global popularity and comedic charm, Atkinson revealed that he finds Mr. Bean unpleasant and would not welcome him into his home. The comedian explained that the character partly reflects his own childishness at the age of ten, combining a sense of selfishness with eccentric ways of solving problems.

“I dislike Mr. Bean as a person. He is possibly a bit like I was at age ten – that sort of childish selfishness and working things out in a slightly eccentric way. But at the same time, I wouldn’t want him in my house,” Atkinson said, giving audiences a rare insight into the mind behind one of the world’s most iconic comedy figures.

Despite Atkinson’s personal critique, Mr. Bean remains one of the United Kingdom’s biggest comedy exports. Since its debut in 1990, the franchise has reached over 190 countries, gathered more than 35 million subscribers on YouTube, and accumulated over 12 billion views worldwide. Atkinson’s Netflix series Man vs. Baby promises to showcase his trademark humor in a new light while giving fans a glimpse into the creator’s candid thoughts on one of the most recognizable comedy characters in history.
