Ruby Rose has publicly criticized Sydney Sweeney over the disappointing box office performance of Christy, the biopic inspired by boxing legend Christy Martin. Released on November 7 in over 2,000 theaters, the film managed only $1.3 million in its opening weekend, landing it among the worst wide openings in recent history.
The Orange Is the New Black alum took to Threads on November 10 to voice her frustration, calling Sweeney a “cretin” and claiming that she “ruined” the project. Rose revealed that she had been in talks to feature in the film and praised the original script as “incredible” and “life-changing.” She was slated to play the role of Cherry, a key character in Martin's story.
“Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay. It’s part of why I stayed in acting. Losing roles happens all the time,” Rose wrote, further condemning the PR remarks made by Sweeney after the film’s underwhelming debut.
Sweeney, in contrast, defended her portrayal of Christy Martin, stating on Instagram that she was “deeply proud” of the film and honored to represent someone “as strong and resilient as Christy Martin.” She described the biopic as a testament to “survival, courage, and hope,” emphasizing the personal and professional pride she felt in bringing Martin’s story to the big screen.
Christy Martin herself had previously praised Sweeney’s performance. Speaking at the Toronto Film Festival in September, Martin noted that Sweeney captured the complexity of her personality, blending her reserved nature with the fierce determination she exhibited in the boxing ring. “So I have those two parts of my personality, and I also think that's why Sydney Sweeney is doing such an awesome job because she got to be this totally different person that none of you expected,” Martin said.
The clash between Rose and Sweeney has added fuel to the ongoing conversation surrounding Christy, a film that aimed to celebrate the legacy of one of boxing’s most iconic figures but stumbled commercially despite high-profile attention and marketing.
As the debate continues online and among fans, the controversy underscores the challenges biopics face in translating iconic figures’ lives into compelling cinema, especially when expectations collide with reality at the box office.
