Russia’s defence ministry has introduced a proposal to create a special medal dedicated to servicemen and civilians involved in recovering bodies from active combat zones. The move offers a rare glimpse into the scale of Russia’s struggle to track missing personnel nearly four years after the conflict with Ukraine began.
According to the draft regulation published on Monday in an official government database, the award would honour individuals who risk their lives to retrieve the bodies of fallen soldiers and others killed in battle. The document highlights the dangers involved, noting that these evacuations often take place under life-threatening conditions.
The proposal also suggests recognising those who develop or use innovative technologies aimed at locating bodies on the front lines and identifying the dead. This includes modern tools that help speed up the recovery process in heavily contested areas.
Both Russia and Ukraine treat their wartime casualty numbers as state secrets. However, independent assessments and Western intelligence reports continue to paint a grim picture of the human toll. Earlier this year, British military intelligence estimated that more than one million Russian soldiers have been killed or wounded since the invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022.
