A senior Russian army officer was killed on Monday after a bomb placed under his car exploded in southern Moscow. The blast shocked the area and started a major investigation.
The man who died was Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov. He was the head of the training department in the Russian military’s General Staff. Officials confirmed that the explosion happened when he was near or inside his car.
Investigators said an explosive device had been hidden under the vehicle. When it went off, the general was killed on the spot. Police teams quickly reached the scene and blocked the area.
Authorities have opened a murder case into how the Russian general was killed. They are checking many possible angles. One key focus is whether the attack was linked to Ukrainian special forces. Officials said this is only one line of inquiry and the probe is still ongoing.
Since Russia sent its troops into Ukraine in February 2022, several Russian military officers and people close to the government have been attacked. Some of these attacks happened inside Russia, while others took place in regions controlled by Russian forces.
Earlier this year, another senior officer, General Yaroslav Moskalik, was killed in a car explosion near Moscow. In December last year, Igor Kirillov, who led Russia’s chemical and biological defence unit, died after an explosive device attached to an electric scooter went off in the capital.
In past cases, some attacks were later claimed by Ukrainian security groups. However, officials say it is too early to say who is behind this latest killing.
The killing of the Russian general killed in Moscow has raised fresh concerns about security for top military leaders. Police and security teams are now on high alert as the investigation continues.
Experts say such attacks often involve careful planning and are rarely caused by just one factor. Authorities have asked people to avoid spreading rumours while the probe is underway.
