New York, Sep 27, 2025: India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar hosted a meeting of the BRICS Foreign Ministers in New York, emphasizing the bloc’s crucial role in promoting multilateralism, diplomacy, and constructive international engagement.
Addressing the ministers, Jaishankar stated that BRICS stands firm as a voice of reason and constructive change at a time when multilateralism faces global challenges. He stressed the importance of peacebuilding, dialogue, adherence to international law, and diplomatic cooperation in today’s turbulent world.
Highlighting institutional reforms, Jaishankar urged BRICS to push for comprehensive reforms of the United Nations, especially the UN Security Council, echoing the group’s long-standing demand for more representative global governance.
On economic matters, Jaishankar noted that rising protectionism, tariff fluctuations, and non-tariff barriers threaten global trade, and stressed BRICS’ role in defending the multilateral trading system. He also underlined that technology and innovation will drive the next phase of BRICS cooperation.
Outlining India’s priorities as the current BRICS Chair, Jaishankar highlighted focus areas including food and energy security, climate action, sustainable development, digital transformation, startups, innovation, and strengthened development partnerships.
Jaishankar also met with the IBSA Foreign Ministers (India, Brazil, South Africa), calling for transformative reform of the UN Security Council and discussing intra-IBSA trade, maritime exercises, and development initiatives.
Additionally, he co-chaired the India-CELAC Foreign Ministers’ Meeting with Colombian Foreign Minister Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio, agreeing to enhance cooperation in agriculture, trade, health, digital technologies, AI, critical minerals, space, and renewable energy, and advocating for reform of multilateral institutions to represent the Global South effectively.
On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Jaishankar held bilateral meetings with counterparts from Indonesia, Russia, Antigua and Barbuda, Uruguay, and Colombia, reinforcing India’s commitment to global diplomacy, multilateralism, and South-South cooperation.
