Bondi Beach Shooter Sajid Akram India Connection

Bondi Beach Shooter Sajid Akram India Connection

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Sajid Akram Behind Deadly Bondi Beach Shooting

Sajid Akram, originally from Hyderabad in southern India, was one of two men suspected in the deadly Bondi Beach mass shooting that killed 15 people. The attack, carried out during Hanukkah celebrations, shocked Australia and the global community, highlighting the reach of radicalisation and the threat of lone-wolf attackers.

Indian Roots and Limited Family Contact

Police sources revealed that Sajid Akram, 50, had limited contact with his family in India. He moved to Australia in 1998, visiting India only six times, mainly for family matters. Authorities say his family had no knowledge of his radical mindset or activities.

Timeline and Radicalisation

Sajid Akram and his 24-year-old son Naveed are suspected of executing the attack on Sunday. Prior to the shooting, both reportedly traveled to the Philippines from November 1 to November 28. Security sources suggest they may have received military-style training during their visit, though this remains unconfirmed. Naveed Akram had previously been investigated for links to an IS cell in Sydney, but no ongoing threat was detected at the time.

Official Statements and Investigations

Telangana police confirmed Sajid Akram had no criminal record in India, held a degree, and had migrated to Australia seeking employment before marrying a woman of European origin. Both father and son carried identification relevant to their respective citizenships: Sajid with an Indian passport and Naveed with Australian identification. Australian and Philippine authorities are cooperating to investigate their movements and training activities.

Global Implications and Security Concerns

The Bondi Beach attack underscores the risk of radicalised individuals acting independently of local influences. While Sajid Akram had Indian roots, officials say the radicalisation appears disconnected from India or Telangana. The attack also raises concerns about overseas travel for training and the monitoring of individuals previously investigated for extremist ties.

Latest Update and What’s Next

Sajid Akram died at the scene, while investigations continue into the motives and preparations behind the attack. Authorities are examining international travel records, training links, and potential networks. Global security experts are calling for strengthened monitoring of cross-border extremist activities to prevent similar tragedies.
