A7A5, a rouble-pegged stablecoin linked to Russian entities and targeted by U.S. and UK sanctions, was among the platinum sponsors of the TOKEN2049 cryptocurrency conference held in Singapore this week. Despite its sanctioned status, A7A5 maintained a prominent presence at the event, including a booth and a stage appearance by its regulatory director, Oleg Ogienko.
Launched in January 2025 by a Russian defense lender and a payments firm, A7A5 was designed to facilitate cross-border transactions for Russian companies, particularly in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. In August, both the U.S. and UK imposed sanctions on several companies associated with A7A5, alleging that the stablecoin was part of a network aiding Russians in evading Western financial restrictions.
At TOKEN2049, one of the largest global crypto conferences with over 25,000 attendees and more than 500 exhibitors, A7A5 was listed as a platinum sponsor. Conference staff wore T-shirts featuring the A7A5 logo, and Ogienko spoke on stage. However, following media inquiries, the conference organizers removed references to A7A5 and Ogienko from their materials.
Since its launch, A7A5 has experienced significant growth, with reported transfers increasing from $40 billion in July to $70.8 billion in October. Ogienko defended the coin's legitimacy, citing compliance with Kyrgyz regulations and stating that it is used for cross-border transactions by Russian companies. Singapore and Hong Kong have not imposed sanctions on companies tied to A7A5.
The situation underscores the challenges Western countries face in curbing crypto-based sanctions evasion, especially outside their jurisdiction. While Western sanctions target entities within their reach, the decentralized nature of cryptocurrencies and the absence of global regulatory standards complicate enforcement efforts.
