On October 10, 2025, Saudi Arabia’s national airline, Saudia, successfully launched its first direct flight from Riyadh to Moscow, landing safely at Sheremetyevo Airport. The new route marks a significant step in strengthening travel, business, tourism, and diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Russia.
The Riyadh–Moscow flight is scheduled to operate three times a week, offering passengers a faster and more comfortable journey compared to previous routes, which required layovers in other countries. This direct service saves time and makes travel easier for tourists, businesspeople, and government officials.
Saudia’s new flight complements existing connections. Saudi budget airline Flynas started direct flights between Riyadh and Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport in August 2025 and plans to begin Jeddah–Moscow flights in December. Together, these routes provide travelers with greater flexibility and convenience.
The launch reflects growing cooperation between the two nations, driven in part by the strong personal relationship between Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Over the years, both countries have deepened ties through political, economic, and diplomatic initiatives, including last year’s prisoner exchange deal facilitated by Saudi Arabia.
Tourism benefits are expected to rise on both sides. Russians can now visit Riyadh and Jeddah without long layovers, exploring cultural landmarks and local attractions. Similarly, Saudis can travel directly to Moscow to experience Russia’s architecture, museums, and cultural events. Increased tourism is also likely to boost local businesses such as hotels, restaurants, and travel agencies.
Business travel and trade will see improvements as well. Direct flights enable executives, investors, and teams from both countries to meet more efficiently, speeding up negotiations and strengthening partnerships in industries like energy, technology, and construction.
The flights are also expected to encourage cultural and educational exchanges. Students, academics, and professionals can attend programs, conferences, and workshops more conveniently. Artists, performers, and cultural delegations can travel faster for concerts, exhibitions, and festivals, fostering mutual understanding.
Passengers benefit from greater convenience, shorter travel times, fewer layovers, and reduced risk of missed connections or lost luggage. The direct service ensures smoother travel for families, tourists, and business travelers alike.
Diplomatically, the new flight sends a strong message about trust and collaboration. It highlights the countries’ willingness to work together across multiple areas, from travel and trade to education and culture.
Looking ahead, both Saudia and Flynas plan to expand services based on demand. Saudia may increase flights from three to five per week, while Flynas will start its Jeddah–Moscow route in December. This expansion reflects growing interest in travel between the two nations.
The economic impact of the direct flights is expected to be positive. Tourism revenue will increase, business deals can proceed faster, and job opportunities in airlines, airports, and tourism-related sectors will grow.
Challenges remain, such as ensuring passenger safety, handling increased airport traffic, streamlining visa processes, and managing potential political or economic disruptions. Both countries will need close coordination to maintain smooth operations.
Passengers on the first flight expressed excitement over the new convenience. Many Russians were traveling to Saudi Arabia for the first time, while Saudi travelers welcomed the shorter journey to Moscow. Officials from both countries highlighted the importance of the route in strengthening tourism, trade, and cultural ties.
The launch of Saudia’s first direct flight from Riyadh to Moscow is a historic milestone, offering faster, comfortable, and convenient travel. It reflects the deepening friendship between Saudi Arabia and Russia and is expected to enhance tourism, business, education, and cultural exchange in the years to come.
