Chennai Schools Shut Amid Cyclone Ditwah's Impact

Chennai Schools Shut Amid Cyclone Ditwah's Impact

Post by : Meena Ariff

Chennai and surrounding districts are experiencing heavy rainfall from the remnants of Cyclone Ditwah. To prioritize the safety of students, officials have announced the closure of schools and colleges across Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts.

Northern Tamil Nadu saw substantial downpours early today, while Chennai faced moderate rain throughout the day. The continuous rainfall has led to waterlogging in several areas, disrupting daily activities and leading to precautionary actions.

As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system transitioned from a cyclonic storm over the southwest Bay of Bengal to a well-marked low-pressure area over the northern Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts by 5:30 am IST on December 3, 2025. The IMD indicates that the low-pressure system is set to move slowly southwestward along Tamil Nadu’s northern coastal areas, weakening further in the next 24 hours.

Local authorities advise residents to stay indoors and refrain from non-essential travel, while emergency services remain on high alert to address any incidents resulting from waterlogging or flooding in susceptible zones.

The ongoing rains have raised worries about traffic disruptions, potential power outages, and impacts on local commerce. Citizens are urged to take essential precautions and stay informed through official weather updates.

Chennai and its neighboring areas are likely to experience sporadic rainfall over the next day, as residents eagerly await updates from the IMD regarding any potential changes.
