In the latest winter developments, numerous schools throughout the United Kingdom have closed their doors due to the coldest night experienced so far. An intense Arctic air mass has taken hold, sending temperatures well below freezing, with Norfolk's Marham recording a chilling -12.5°C. More snowfall and additional severe weather disruptions are anticipated in the days to come.
Northern Scotland remains under amber weather warnings for snow until Tuesday night, posing considerable risks such as travel disruptions, power outages, and threats to life and property. Yellow warnings, which indicate potential issues, have been issued for large regions of the UK and extend until late Tuesday morning.
Forecasters predict widespread snow accumulation of 5–10cm across much of central and northern Scotland, with some areas possibly receiving up to 15cm. Dalwhinnie, located in the Scottish Highlands, registered a frigid -11.2°C overnight. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for potential power outages.
The lasting cold snap has resulted in significant school closures nationwide, accounting for over 330 closures in Wales and more than 170 in Northern Ireland on Tuesday. Local authorities in Aberdeenshire, Orkney, and Shetland confirmed ongoing school shutdowns, while numerous schools in England, including those in Norfolk and Devon, faced delays or closures.
Transport networks are also feeling the impacts, with rail services experiencing delays due to heavy snow hindering maintenance efforts, and some international trains were temporarily halted. Multiple ferry routes along Scotland's west coast saw disruptions, and road closures were reported in parts of Wales. Flights at Liverpool John Lennon Airport were momentarily grounded due to icy conditions but have since resumed operations.
Looking to the future, persistent cold weather is expected. Weather experts caution that strong winds and heavy rain may create additional hazards later in the week, especially with a significant low-pressure system moving towards the UK. Areas in southern England, which have so far been spared from snow, may encounter wintry conditions at higher elevations by Thursday and Friday.
Health authorities have issued amber cold weather health alerts throughout England until the week's end, advising people to take necessary precautions, particularly for the elderly and vulnerable. Additionally, the cold snap has initiated cold weather payments in numerous postcode regions, assisting eligible households faced with prolonged freezing temperatures.
As winter weather intensifies, officials advise the public to stay updated, avoid risky travel, and take precautions for safety during these severe weather conditions.
