A major winter storm is on the horizon for Southern Saskatchewan as a robust Alberta clipper approaches. This weather system is anticipated to deliver heavy snowfall, high winds, and dangerously low visibility to areas including Regina and Saskatoon, beginning Wednesday morning. Forecasters project snowfall totals between 10 to 25 centimetres, risking disruption to normal activities due to rapid accumulation.
The storm’s intensity is expected to escalate swiftly, advancing eastward into Manitoba by Wednesday afternoon. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) have issued a winter storm watch along with a blizzard warning for a significant portion of the southern region. The blizzard warning highlights gusty winds reaching speeds of 70 to 80 km/h, which, coupled with drifting snow, may render visibility almost nonexistent in numerous areas.
The warning area extends from the U.S./Canada boundary northward to Onion Lake, encompassing all major southern settlements, except for Prince Albert, Melfort, and Tisdale. Residents are being advised to prepare diligently for perilous driving conditions, likely travel delays, and to stock up on emergency supplies. Accumulating snow on roadways, combined with severe winds, could lead to hazardous travel circumstances, prompting a reevaluation of any non-essential travel until the weather improves.
Local authorities stress the importance of staying updated with weather forecasts and adhering to any guidance or advisories provided by emergency services. Schools, transportation operations, and businesses in affected regions may experience disruptions as the storm unfolds, encouraging residents to plan accordingly.
As Saskatchewan readies itself for this impactful winter event, communities are reminded to check on neighbours who may need assistance, secure outdoor items, and ensure access to necessary supplies. Although winter storms are a regular occurrence in the province, this particular Alberta clipper is predicted to be exceptionally rapid and severe, making vigilance and preparedness essential for all in Southern Saskatchewan.
