During a prestigious ceremony held in Nikko, Japan, Louvre Abu Dhabi, in partnership with Richard Mille, crowned Ryoichi Kurokawa as the recipient of the fifth Richard Mille Art Prize. Kurokawa, chosen from a group of shortlisted artists showcased in Art Here 2025, received a cash award of US$60,000 for his innovative project skadw-.
skadw- reimagines the concept of shadows as a captivating artistic experience. The installation intricately weaves light, sound, and drifting fog to forge a vibrant atmosphere where shadows take on a tangible existence. A slender beam of light traverses through swathes of mist, crafting transient patterns that emerge and vanish, encouraging onlookers to visualize absence and space as palpable entities.
Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of Ma, which honors intervals and the void, Kurokawa's work treats shadows not merely as a by-product of illumination but as a significant entity shaping our perception.
Manuel Rabaté, Director of Louvre Abu Dhabi, acclaimed the piece, stating: “skadw- delves into the theme of ‘Shadows’ with both emotional resonance and formal accuracy, underscoring our dedication to artistic excellence and innovation.”
Tilly Harrison, Managing Director of Richard Mille Middle East, remarked, “Kurokawa’s artistry bridges Japanese heritage with international viewpoints, enriching cross-cultural dialogue in modern art.”
The jury comprised prominent individuals, including His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, Dr. Guilhem André, Maya Allison, Sophie Mayuko Arni, and Yuko Hasegawa, who ensured a meticulous selection process.
Dr. André commended the artists’ imaginative interpretations of this year's theme, noting how Art Here seamlessly integrates contemporary expressions within the Louvre Abu Dhabi's architecture. Sophie Mayuko Arni mentioned that skadw- emerged as one of the most favored and visited installations, reflecting the transformative influence of technology and new media in contemporary artistic expressions.
Ryoichi Kurokawa expressed his appreciation: “skadw- allows shadows to steer perception, rendering absence into a discernible presence. I am thrilled to share my creation with a broad audience.”
This year’s Art Here 2025 attracted over 400 entries from artists spanning the GCC, Japan, and MENA regions, featuring works by Ahmed Alaqra, Jumairy, Rintaro Fuse, Hamra Abbas, and the duo YOKOMAE et BOUAYAD on display at Louvre Abu Dhabi until 28 December.
Art Here remains a premier platform for contemporary artists, showcasing innovative ideas and nurturing cultural artistic exchanges.
