Post by : Badri Ariffin

His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, reaffirmed Sharjah’s dedication to the Arabic language during a gathering with the founders of the Arabic Language Academy (ALA) in Beirut. This significant meeting took place on Sunday at the Dr Sultan Al Qasimi Centre in University City, Sharjah, and underscored the ongoing cultural and linguistic partnership between Sharjah and Lebanon.

The Lebanese delegation was led by Dr Emile Badi Yaqub and His Excellency Dr Rashid Darbas. His Highness extended a warm welcome, congratulating them on the formal inauguration of the Arabic Language Academy in Beirut. He recognized their collaboration with Sharjah as an enriching and timely contribution to the Arabic-speaking community.

Sheikh Sultan emphasized Lebanon’s historic and crucial role in nurturing Arabic culture and literature, acknowledging the lineage of scholars, writers, and thinkers who have significantly shaped Arabic creative expression, arts, and intellectual pursuits throughout history. He expressed optimism that the Beirut academy would honor this legacy and actively contribute to preserving and enhancing the Arabic language.

His Highness also stressed the significance of collaboration among Arabic language academies throughout the Arab region. He argued that such partnerships are vital for documenting, publishing, and conducting research, ensuring that the Arabic language evolves while retaining its deep-rooted history.

The discussions included the work of the Sharjah Arabic Language Academy and its outreach initiatives toward institutions across the Arab region, in addition to Europe and Africa. Sheikh Sultan asserted that ongoing collaboration, joint endeavors, and shared publications are essential for connecting younger generations with the Arabic language, reinforcing its stature in science, education, and knowledge.

Members of the Lebanese delegation expressed gratitude for Sharjah’s unwavering support for Arabic language endeavors. They acknowledged that Sharjah’s initiatives have led to significant projects benefiting Arabic language, literature, and the arts, while also promoting academic research and publishing. They cited the Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language as a remarkable achievement with both regional and global significance.

The meeting wrapped up with His Highness receiving a commemorative shield from the Lebanese academy and several scholarly publications. He also posed for photographs with the delegation, embodying the spirit of cooperation and collective cultural responsibility that characterized the visit.
