The Sharjah Warriorz secured a dominant 11-run victory over the Gulf Giants at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Monday, showcasing a balanced performance with both bat and ball in the DP World ILT20 Season 4. The win marks the Warriorz’s second consecutive triumph in the tournament, highlighting their growing momentum.
Tom Abell played a pivotal role with the bat, scoring a commanding 68 off just 41 balls, including five boundaries and three sixes, to steer the Warriorz to a competitive total of 174 for six. Abell’s innings provided stability after early wickets and lifted the scoring rate during the middle overs. James Rew contributed with 39 runs off 33 deliveries, forming a 71-run partnership with Abell that kept the Warriorz firmly in control. Dwaine Pretorius finished the innings with a quick 28 off 13, giving the team a strong finish, while Ethan D’Souza added a rapid 8 not out, helping set a challenging target for the Gulf Giants.
The Warriorz’s bowling attack, led by Matheesha Pathirana and Wasim Akram, ensured the Giants never gained a foothold in the chase. Pathirana, who claimed three crucial wickets, and Akram, also taking three key scalps, combined with Taskin Ahmed’s early breakthroughs, put the Giants under pressure from the start. The opening overs saw Pathum Nissanka and James Vince dismissed cheaply, leaving the Giants struggling at 44 for four during the powerplay.
Although Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Azmatullah Omarzai tried to rebuild the innings with aggressive counterattacks, Pathirana’s precise slower balls and Akram’s sharp bowling broke partnerships at crucial moments. Moeen Ali fought valiantly with a 45-run innings, but wickets continued to fall around him, with the Warriors’ bowlers maintaining control through the final overs. Dwaine Pretorius chipped in again at the death to remove Asif Khan and Liam Dawson, ensuring the Giants were restricted to 163 for nine.
The stand-in skipper Sikander Raza praised the team’s composure, emphasizing that winning key moments, particularly in the powerplay, made the difference in securing victory. Pathirana, named player of the match, expressed satisfaction with his performance, stating that while he is still finding his rhythm, the win and his contribution give him confidence ahead of upcoming T20 events.
With this victory, the Sharjah Warriorz have established themselves as strong contenders in the DP World ILT20 Season 4, combining explosive batting performances with disciplined bowling to dominate their opponents. Their ability to execute plans under pressure and capitalize on key moments has become a hallmark of their campaign, keeping fans excited for the matches ahead.
This comprehensive performance demonstrates the Warriorz’s skill in managing both middle overs batting and death-over bowling, reinforcing their status as one of the most balanced teams in the league and boosting their chances for a strong finish in the tournament.
