Singapore authorities have arrested a Malaysian man following the discovery of a large quantity of suspected drugs at the Tuas Checkpoint. The case came to light after officers inspecting a Malaysia-registered motorcycle found several sealed packets inside its rear storage box. The packets were labelled as commercial biscuits, but their contents raised suspicion during the inspection. Officers from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) subsequently alerted the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB), which carried out further checks. According to authorities, the motorcycle was found carrying several types of controlled drugs. The seizure included approximately 6.96kg of heroin, 1.1kg of methamphetamine and 1.03kg of cannabis. The combined drug haul from the related operations was estimated to be worth more than S$1 million. The Malaysian man was arrested on Sept 23 after arriving at the checkpoint on the motorcycle. 

Drugs Discovered Inside Motorcycle Storage Box

The investigation began when ICA officers selected the Malaysia-registered motorcycle for enhanced checks. During the inspection, officers noticed sealed packets stored inside the rear box of the motorcycle. The packets were marked as commercial biscuits, but officers suspected that they could contain controlled substances. The CNB was immediately informed. Further examination uncovered additional packets of a similar nature. Authorities subsequently seized nearly 7kg of heroin, more than 1kg of methamphetamine and more than 1kg of cannabis from the motorcycle. The quantities involved make the case one of the significant Singapore drug bust operations reported in connection with the Tuas border crossing. The incident has also drawn attention to security checks at one of Singapore's major land entry points, where vehicles and travellers arriving from Malaysia are subject to immigration and customs-related screening.

Second Arrest Made in Tampines

The investigation did not end with the seizure at Tuas Checkpoint. Following the initial detection, CNB officers conducted further investigations and launched a separate operation in the vicinity of Tampines Street 83 on the same day. A 41-year-old Singaporean man was arrested in connection with suspected drug offences. Officers later searched his residence as part of the investigation. During the operation and subsequent search, authorities recovered approximately 790g of heroin, 602g of cannabis, 127g of methamphetamine, 51g of ecstasy tablets and 21g of ketamine.

Officers also seized S$33,086 in cash.

The additional seizure means that the overall operation involved several different types of controlled substances. Authorities said the combined value of the drugs seized in the two operations was estimated at more than S$1 million.

Authorities said the heroin, methamphetamine and cannabis seized during the operations could potentially supply the addiction of thousands of drug abusers for a week. Current reporting puts that estimate at about 4,598 abusers.

Tuas Checkpoint Becomes Key Focus of Investigation

The investigation is continuing, and the final legal outcome will depend on the evidence and proceedings under Singapore law.

The case has several elements that have attracted attention. First, authorities say a large quantity of different drugs was discovered during a border inspection. Second, the drugs were allegedly concealed in sealed packets labelled as biscuits, prompting further checks by enforcement officers.
