A 37-year-old man in Singapore has been sentenced to nine months in jail after pushing a 78-year-old man during an altercation that later resulted in the elderly man's death. The accused, Jimmy Yar Hock Long, pleaded guilty to voluntarily causing hurt that eventually resulted in grievous injury. The incident happened after he saw his father being struck on the head with an umbrella.
The incident took place on May 25, 2025, near Upper Serangoon Road and Wolskel Road. Yar was walking with his father and other family members when the 78-year-old approached his father from behind and hit him with an umbrella. Seeing his father being attacked, Yar immediately intervened. He grabbed the elderly man and pushed him onto the pavement. The victim fell heavily and suffered a serious head injury. He was taken to hospital with a fractured skull and later developed seizures.
Despite medical treatment, the victim remained in a coma. He was pronounced dead on May 27, 2025. An autopsy determined that the cause of death was a head injury suffered during the fall. The case highlights how a physical confrontation can quickly turn fatal, even when the initial intention is not to cause a life-threatening injury.
The court was also told that Yar's father and the deceased had a history of disputes. Both men had previously received police warnings over their conduct. The prosecution argued that the sentence should reflect the serious outcome of Yar's actions, while the defence highlighted that the victim had first attacked Yar's elderly father.
Prosecutors had requested a jail term of between 10 and 12 months. They noted that Yar was younger and physically stronger than the deceased. The defence sought a sentence of no more than eight months, arguing that Yar acted spontaneously to protect his father from an unexpected attack. The defence also stressed that Yar intended to cause hurt by pushing the man but did not intend for the elderly victim to suffer a fatal head injury.
The case was handled under Singapore's laws concerning voluntarily causing hurt that results in grievous injury. Such an offence can carry a prison sentence of up to five years, a fine of up to S$10,000, or both.
