Sister Sabina Triumphs in Hurdle Race Before Teaching Retirement

Sister Sabina Triumphs in Hurdle Race Before Teaching Retirement

Post by : Maya Rahman

During a recent athletic event in Kerala, the audience was mesmerized as Sister Sabina, dressed in her religious habit and running barefoot, prepared for a race. With remarkable agility and speed, this nun, who is both a physical education teacher and a former national athlete, dashed down the track. She soared over the hurdles, clinching first place in the 55-plus division at the State Masters Athletics meet, showcasing that passion knows no age or attire.

Sister Sabina's story is both remarkable and motivating. Originating from Ennappara in Kasaragod, she has nurtured a lifelong passion for sports. Her athletic talent became evident in school, where she shined in hurdle races while representing her peers at national-level games. Her relentless commitment and discipline marked her as one of the standout athletes of her generation.

Continuing her athletic pursuits during college, she contributed significantly to her university's sports scene, participating in numerous inter-collegiate competitions. Yet, as she embraced a life of service and spirituality, she shifted focus from competing to teaching.

In 1993, Sister Sabina settled in Wayanad, merging her love for sports with education as a physical education instructor at a local institution. Over the years, she motivated countless students to engage in athletics while instilling values of humility and discipline.

Even after stepping back from front-line competition, her connection to athletics remained strong. She continued guiding her students, sharing inspiring stories from her journey as a young competitor.

The recent State Masters Athletics meet held special significance for her. Competing once more in the 55-plus category allowed Sister Sabina to reminisce about her athletic days before concluding her teaching career. Barefoot and in her religious attire at the starting line, she emphasized that true enthusiasm never diminishes.

As the race commenced, she exhibited the form and technique that once dazzled the national scene. The crowd, initially silent, erupted with joy as she conquered each hurdle with confidence. Upon crossing the finish line first, she was met with rapturous applause, marking the event as a testament to enduring spirit and a lifelong love for sports.

Post-race, Sister Sabina reflected on her journey with satisfaction, stating, “I aim to retire next March as a physical education teacher, and participating today fulfilled my wish to race once more.” Her words revealed her profound connections to athletics and her desire to conclude her competitive chapter on a high note.

Sister Sabina's achievement has captured widespread attention online, inspiring countless individuals with her spirit and dedication. She has become a role model displaying that neither age nor profession can inhibit one’s passion. Her narrative inspires both young and older athletes nationwide, reinforcing the importance of persistence in pursuing dreams.

For her students and peers, her victory transcends mere competition; it embodies a message that unwavering faith and perseverance can overcome any barrier. Combining her spiritual commitment and athletic passion, she stands as a strong example of pursuing what you love wholeheartedly.

As Sister Sabina steps into retirement, she leaves a legacy that extends well beyond the athletics arena. Her life, rich in humility, faith, and excellence, resonates with all who have learned from her. Her recent victory symbolizes an honorable conclusion to a life dedicated to discipline and commitment, sure to be remembered within Kerala’s sports community for years to come.
