A heart-stopping skydiving incident in Australia has captured global attention after footage showed a jumper left dangling mid-air when their parachute snagged on a plane’s tail. The dramatic stunt took place south of Cairns in September, but the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) only recently released the video following a thorough investigation.
The incident occurred during a planned 16-way formation jump at 15,000 feet, filmed by a parachuting camera operator. Chaos erupted within seconds of the first participant reaching the aircraft’s exit. The skydiver’s reserve parachute became entangled with the plane’s tail, flinging them backward and causing their legs to strike the aircraft. In the process, the jumper also accidentally knocked the camera operator into freefall.
While suspended over the terrifying drop, the skydiver remained remarkably composed, placing their hands on their helmet for a few moments before taking action. Using a hook knife, the jumper carefully cut the reserve parachute lines wrapped around the plane’s tail and successfully freed themselves. They then deployed their main parachute and landed safely on the ground, escaping what could have been a fatal accident.
The aircraft itself sustained substantial damage to its tail, forcing the pilot to issue a mayday distress call. Despite the damage and limited control, the pilot managed to safely land the plane, averting further disaster. ATSB Chief Commissioner Angus Mitchell highlighted the critical role of safety equipment, noting that carrying a hook knife—though not mandatory—can be life-saving during such emergencies.
This astonishing footage has drawn attention to the dangers inherent in extreme sports like skydiving while emphasizing the importance of safety protocols and training. The incident has sparked discussions in the aviation and adventure sports communities worldwide, underlining that preparedness and quick thinking can make the difference between life and death during high-risk activities.
The story continues to trend online, with viewers captivated by the jumper’s calm, decisive actions in the face of extreme danger, making it a memorable case study for skydiving safety and emergency response.
