Inspection Reveals Urgent Repairs Needed at SMPN 1 Sambong School Building

Inspection Reveals Urgent Repairs Needed at SMPN 1 Sambong School Building

Post by : Meena Ariff

Mariman Darto, a specialist from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, recently conducted an inspection at SMPN 1 Sambong, a public junior high school located in Blora, Central Java. The school, constructed in 1983, is showing significant signs of wear and tear, with critical damage found in the roof and ceiling that threatens the safety of both students and staff.

During his Saturday visit, Darto emphasized the dangers posed by the collapsed roof and damaged ceilings, urging an immediate and thorough safety inspection across all classrooms. His concern was deepened by a personal connection to the school, having been a member of its second student cohort. He also raised the possibility that many other older schools nationwide might be facing similar structural risks.

This inspection aligns with a wider government initiative focused on revitalizing school facilities, led by the current administration. The goal is to foster safe, comfortable, and culturally supportive learning spaces while also improving sanitation standards to promote healthy environments.

As the only junior high school in the district, SMPN 1 Sambong plays a critical role in local education. The school principal, Wiwik Sulistiyowati, noted that damage had been accumulating over the years, with the most severe incident occurring on December 15, 2025, when the roof and ceiling collapsed. Since that event, classes have been temporarily relocated to other areas such as the school laboratories.

The national school revitalization program scheduled for 2026 plans to renovate more than 11,000 schools, pending budget approval. Physical repairs are expected to begin between February and March, with completion aimed for June, ensuring safer and improved learning environments across the country.
