South Africa achieved a historic 2-0 series win against India in India, marking their first Test series victory on Indian soil in 25 years. This impressive feat, accomplished by Temba Bavuma's team, strengthens their status as world champions in the long format of cricket.
The series began with a controversial pitch in Kolkata, which sparked debate but did not overshadow South Africa’s commanding victory inside three days. This was South Africa’s first Test win in India since 2010. India faced additional challenges when their captain, Shubman Gill, had to retire hurt with a neck injury during the opening match, ruling him out of the rest of the series.
The second Test in Guwahati saw South Africa dominate completely, delivering a 408-run defeat to India, which is India’s largest Test loss by runs. The Proteas managed this success despite missing their key fast bowler Kagiso Rabada, who was sidelined due to a rib injury.
India had maintained a strong home record in Tests, not losing a series at home for 12 years until New Zealand broke that streak last year. South Africa’s whitewash victory solidifies their second place in the World Test Championship standings, just behind Australia, whom they defeated in the WTC final earlier this year.
Temba Bavuma expressed pride in the team's achievement, emphasizing how special it was considering the struggles they had faced in the past. South Africa’s coach, Shukri Conrad, admitted that their goal was to dominate India thoroughly, and their performance showed just that.
Key performances included Senuran Muthusamy’s only century of the series, Simon Harmer’s six second-innings wickets, Marco Jansen’s all-round brilliance, and Aiden Markram’s exceptional fielding with a record nine catches.
On the other hand, India must now reflect on their disappointing performance, which has caused them to slip to fifth place in the WTC rankings, below Pakistan.
This series victory confirms South Africa’s rise as a major force in world Test cricket and sets the stage for exciting future contests in the long format.
