Starlink to Adjust Satellite Orbits for Improved Safety

Starlink to Adjust Satellite Orbits for Improved Safety

Post by : Badri Ariffin

SpaceX's Starlink is preparing to alter its satellite arrangement by lowering the operational altitude of its fleet from 550 kilometers (342 miles) to 480 kilometers throughout 2026. This strategy, revealed by Michael Nicolls, Vice President of Starlink Engineering, aims to bolster safety in Earth's congested orbital space.

This initiative comes after a recent issue in December when a Starlink satellite at 418 kilometers experienced a malfunction, resulting in minor debris and a communication outage. The malfunctioning satellite swiftly descended by four kilometers, indicating a possible onboard explosion—a rare occurrence for the satellite internet provider.

Nicolls noted that this reduction in orbit will condense satellite trajectories, significantly enhancing orbital safety. Areas below 500 kilometers have fewer debris and planned spacecraft, thereby diminishing the probability of collisions.

With the surge in satellite launches globally for internet connectivity, communications, and Earth monitoring, this adjustment in altitude allows Starlink to manage the increasing orbital traffic more effectively. SpaceX, renowned for its rocket launches, is now the world's leading satellite operator, boasting nearly 10,000 Starlink satellites providing broadband access to governments, businesses, and consumers.
