In a troubling incident at Tata Steel Zoological Park in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, ten blackbucks perished from a suspected bacterial infection between December 1 and December 6, officials reported. The final death occurred on December 6. Previously, the zoo housed 18 blackbucks out of approximately 370 animals, leaving only eight surviving after this occurrence.
The deceased animals were sent to Ranchi Veterinary College for thorough examination. Dr. Pragya Lakra, an Assistant Professor of Veterinary Pathology, indicated that the culprits are likely to be Haemorrhagic Septicaemia, commonly termed Pasteurellosis, caused by Pasteurella bacteria. A detailed investigation is planned to establish the exact cause behind these fatalities.
Dr. Naim Akhtar, deputy director of TSZP, noted that the first reported death was on December 1, and subsequent samples were sent to Ranchi Veterinary College for further analysis. Additionally, Jamshedpur Divisional Forest Officer Saba Alam stated that the Central Zoo Authority has been notified, and precautions are actively being taken to curb the spread of the disease.
Dr. M.K. Gupta, chairman of Ranchi Veterinary College’s Pathology Department, elaborated that the Pasteurella bacteria proliferate swiftly within the body, affecting the lungs and causing sudden demise. Symptoms typically include severe fever, neck swelling, and diarrhea. Dr. Akhtar confirmed that antibacterial treatments have commenced, and the situation is now under control.
In light of the situation, Birsa Biological Park in Ranchi has heightened its vigilance, housing 69 blackbucks. Preventative measures include the application of antiviral and antibacterial agents as well as regular bleaching of susceptible areas. The zoo is home to around 1,450 animals and birds across 83 species within a 104-hectare area.
Authorities are steadfast in their monitoring efforts to o ensure the safety and health of all wildlife in the vicinity, aiming to avert any further losses.
