Grand Blanc Township, Michigan: The suspect in Sunday’s mass shooting at a Mormon church in Michigan has been identified as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford, a former US Marine with a decorated military career. Authorities said Sanford drove his vehicle through the church’s front doors, opened fire on the congregation, and set the building on fire while hundreds of people attended a service. At least four people were killed and eight others injured. Police shot and killed Sanford at the scene.
Police Chief William Renye stated that officers arrived at the church within 30 seconds of a 911 call and engaged the suspect about eight minutes later. Two officers pursued him after he left the church, exchanging gunfire. Authorities have not released a motive for the attack.
Records show Sanford graduated from a nearby high school in 2004 and served in the US Marines from June 2004 to June 2008, reaching the rank of sergeant. He worked as an automotive mechanic and vehicle recovery operator and was deployed to Iraq from August 2007 to March 2008. During his service, he received several medals, including the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. His last assignment was at the 2nd Maintenance Battalion of Combat Logistics Regiment 25 at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.

Sanford married his high school classmate in 2016, and the couple has a 10-year-old son. Neighbors and classmates described him as a normal, quiet individual who enjoyed hunting and appeared like a typical "country kid" growing up.
The shooting has deeply affected the community, with residents recounting the terrifying moments as gunfire rang out near the church. This incident marks the second mass shooting in the United States in less than 24 hours, following an earlier attack in Southport, North Carolina, that left three dead and five injured.
President Donald Trump, in a social media post, said he was briefed on the Michigan shooting and commended the FBI for their swift response. Authorities are sending 100 FBI agents to Grand Blanc Township, a town of approximately 40,000 people outside Flint.
