Evacuation of Stranded Everest Trekkers in Tibet Nears Completion

Evacuation of Stranded Everest Trekkers in Tibet Nears Completion

Post by : Saif Rahman

More than 200 trekkers stranded near the eastern face of Mount Everest in Tibet are expected to be fully evacuated by Tuesday, following sudden snowstorms that swept across western China. The rescue operation, which began on Monday, has focused on ensuring the safety of hikers caught off guard by extreme weather during the recent holiday period.

Trekkers Caught in Sudden Blizzard

The trouble began over the weekend when a blizzard struck western China’s high-altitude regions, including Tibet. Hundreds of hikers, eager to see Everest’s remote Kangshung face, were trapped in deep snow. Many were unprepared for the harsh conditions, which included heavy snowfall and icy trails.

Eric Wen, a 41-year-old trekker, described the journey: “Thankfully, some people ahead of us were breaking trail, leaving footprints we could follow. Otherwise, it would have been impossible to make it out on our own.” Wen and his group trekked 19 kilometers through heavy snow before regional authorities guided them safely to Lhasa, Tibet’s capital.

Snow fell particularly heavily in Karma Valley, at an average altitude of 4,200 meters, one of Tibet’s most pristine areas. Unlike Everest’s dry northern face, this valley is covered with lush vegetation and untouched alpine forests fed by glacier melt. Prior to the rescue, 350 other hikers had already been guided to safety from this area.

Other Affected Areas

The severe weather also affected regions north of Tibet. In the Qilian Mountains, on the border of Qinghai and Gansu provinces, one trekker tragically died due to hypothermia and acute mountain sickness after being stranded by snowstorms. Authorities successfully evacuated 213 trekkers from the Qilian area by Monday evening, according to China Central Television (CCTV).

Authorities further west, in Xinjiang, suspended hiking and camping in Kanas Lake district in the Altai Mountains. Police patrols had encountered groups of hikers struggling with hypothermia and immobilization. One hiker was hospitalized in stable condition, while over 300 others were persuaded to turn back before entering dangerous areas.

By Tuesday, highways across the affected regions had been cleared of dangerous ice and snow, allowing stranded vehicles and tourists to move safely.

Challenges and Lessons

The rescue efforts highlight the risks of trekking in high-altitude areas, especially during sudden weather changes. Many trekkers underestimated the dangers of snowstorms and relied heavily on trail markings and the guidance of local authorities. The combined efforts of police, regional authorities, and experienced guides were crucial in preventing further casualties.

While Tibet’s remote valleys remain popular for their natural beauty and pristine environment, this incident underscores the need for careful planning, awareness of weather forecasts, and proper gear when trekking in such areas.

Disclaimer

The evacuation of Everest trekkers in Tibet is expected to conclude by Tuesday, marking the end of a challenging and dangerous situation. Though the operation was largely successful, the events serve as a reminder of the unpredictability of mountain conditions and the importance of preparation. As authorities continue monitoring other regions affected by snowstorms, trekkers are urged to follow official warnings and prioritize safety over adventure.
