In a decisive step to safeguard U.S. national security, President Donald Trump has officially blocked the $3 million acquisition of Emcore’s aerospace and defense assets by HieFo Corp. HieFo, a U.S.-based photonics firm, is reportedly controlled by a citizen of the People's Republic of China, raising serious security concerns for the American government.
The White House issued an order on Friday, expressing deep apprehension over the 2024 deal, which involves the transfer of Emcore’s specialized aerospace and defense technologies to HieFo. The order states that this acquisition could potentially compromise the national security interests of the United States. The concern stems from the fact that the controlling interest lies with a Chinese national, which could lead to foreign influence over sensitive U.S. defense capabilities.
Emcore, headquartered in New Jersey, is known for its advanced aerospace and defense technology solutions, making it a critical player in the U.S. defense industry. The proposed acquisition by HieFo raised red flags among U.S. security officials who fear that such a transfer might allow China to access and possibly exploit American defense innovations.
This presidential move reflects the broader and ongoing scrutiny of Chinese investments in key U.S. sectors, especially those related to national security and defense. It highlights the heightened vigilance by the U.S. government to prevent foreign entities, particularly those with ties to China, from gaining control over vital American technologies.
