Trump Raises H-1B Visa Fee to $100K Introduces 'Gold Card' Residency

Trump Raises H-1B Visa Fee to $100K Introduces 'Gold Card' Residency

Post by : Rameen Ariff

On September 19, 2025, President Donald Trump announced significant changes to the U.S. immigration system, introducing a substantial increase in the annual fee for H-1B visas and unveiling a new residency program aimed at attracting wealthy individuals and corporations.

In a move that is expected to impact many foreign workers, particularly in the technology sector, the annual fee for H-1B visas has been raised to $100,000. This marks a dramatic increase from the previous fee of $215. The administration stated that the fee hike is intended to encourage companies to hire American workers while still providing a pathway for "truly extraordinary people" to work in the U.S.

Introduction of the 'Gold Card' Residency Program

Alongside the H-1B fee increase, President Trump introduced the 'Gold Card' residency program, targeting wealthy individuals and corporations seeking fast-tracked U.S. residency. The program includes three tiers:

  • Trump Gold Card: Priced at $1 million for individuals, this card offers expedited processing for lawful permanent residency under existing EB-1 or EB-2 visa categories.

  • Trump Platinum Card: Set at $5 million, this card provides similar benefits to the Gold Card but also allows holders to spend up to 270 days in the U.S. without being subject to taxes on non-U.S. income.

  • Trump Corporate Gold Card: Aimed at businesses, this card costs $2 million per employee and allows companies to sponsor foreign workers for U.S. residency.

These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to reform the U.S. immigration system, generate revenue, and attract top-tier talent. However, they have also sparked debates about their potential impact on the tech industry and the broader economy.
